Using Mastodon is like gardening.

You tend to it almost daily. Some days, more than others.

You occasionally prune, but more often than not, you plant something new and interesting to see what will take root.

It grows over time and eventually itā€™s full of a wide variety of plants that make the entire endeavor feel worth the time you put into it.

Thatā€™s how I feel about Mastodon today.

The whole tech world needs more projects that aren't trying to become billion- (let alone trillion-) dollar ideas, but are happily shooting for success as million-dollar ideas (or less!).

not just the tech world. The problem is that capitalism is now driven solely by growth. Profit alone isnā€™t enough, if your growth isnā€™t growing youā€™re failing. Sad really.

@Mostbutnotall That's just not true. It might be true that current attention -- in both news media and social media -- is focused on large-scale growth, but nothing has changed about the nature of capitalism itself.

If anything I'd argue that it's never been easier to create a sustainable profitable small-scale business.

I once worked on a movie that was not a ā€šsuccessā€˜ on the box office and the director said in an interview that nobody lost money and everyone who worked on the movie got paid. French director it was.

OpenAI accusing DeepSeek, another AI model, of stealing their outputs to train their own model is the funniest thing Iā€™ve read this year.

Ā« This thing is stealing our work that we built by stealing other peopleā€™s work and paraphrasing it incorrectly Ā». Peak 2025.

karma karma karma yey!

The best thing from this is the bubble popping of closed source AI.

friendica (DFRN) - Link to source

Decided to give #Friendica a try, and it is really good!

The ā€œFacebookā€ look-a-like interface and the lack of mobile apps are probably the main factors justifying its lack of popularityā€¦ but it is excellent.

#Pixelfed is pretty specialized for displaying and sharing photos, #mastodon is excellent at micro-blogging, and #friendica is great at both and offers many more features (events, discussion groups, etc.).

You can join an instance at friendi.ca/

Have fun!
