The “Facebook” look-a-like interface and the lack of mobile apps are probably the main factors justifying its lack of popularity… but it is excellent.

#Pixelfed is pretty specialized for displaying and sharing photos, #mastodon is excellent at micro-blogging, and #friendica is great at both and offers many more features (events, discussion groups, etc.).
